Blog - Raising Funds to Save Lives

“The day of the event is almost magical” says Sherri McCullough, Chair, Rose of Hope Tournament, “It’s electric.”

The annual Rose of Hope Golf Tournament at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Tuesday, July 31st, welcoming 156 players to a spirited day of golf, live and silent auctions, a keynote speaker, and the announcement of a number that will push the Tournament toward its $500,000 goal to help configure, equip, furnish and improve the breast screening unit at Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s (KHSC) Hotel Dieu Hospital Site.

After having raised in excess of $1.6 million for cancer services in southeastern Ontario since it began, McCullough admits Rose of Hope is “not just a golf tournament.” With women and men alike decked out in pink there is a lot of fun to be had. But the significance of the greater good—raising funds in order to save lives—is never far from people’s minds.

“We all know someone, we’ve all lost someone, or we’ve been through it ourselves” says Sherri, who attributes the extraordinary results and staying power of this particular Tournament to “a powerful need to give back to our healthcare system, especially to those who are going through the cancer journey.”

For people who cannot play, Sherri McCullough encourages participation in other ways, “Women need to get motivated and get interested” she says, “even if you’re not playing in the tournament you can give online, you can give in memory of someone or you can give simply because it’s the right thing to do—so we can provide the care we need to people in the community.”

“This is my second year as chair and my third year on the tournament committee,” says Sherri, “and I’m convinced this is going to be our best year ever!”
