Awards

Ian Wilson Award

This award honours Ian Wilson, a former hospital board Chair and Chair of the UHKF 'Together We Can' campaign for Kingston's health-care facilities and tireless volunteer with a wide range of community and health-related organizations.

The award is granted annually to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer efforts in the solicitation of donations benefitting Kingston Health Sciences Centre and Providence Care through an event, organized campaign or informal activity.

Any volunteer, hospital staff member, hospital board or committee member, or third-party event organizer may be nominated. Nominations will be accepted from anyone within the hospital community.

2024 Award Recipient: Evelyn Maizen

Evelyn Maizen is a shining example of an outstanding volunteer fundraiser. She has been an engaged Board member, chair and successful Campaign Team member since 2017, and she is a motivated community member who allows everyone the opportunity to support UHKF. In addition to all of this, she leads by example with her own philanthropy both in terms of major gifts and planned gifts. She brings new and fresh fundraising ideas to the table, always looking for ways to keep the conversation for supporting the hospital open.

Through her own gifts and gifts that she has inspired, she has helped to facilitate in excess of $1 million in government funding for hospital redevelopment. As a volunteer, she has raised more than $150,000 in major gifts and identified many planned giving opportunities.

Whether Evelyn is decorating cookies at a Smile Cookie Day event, hosting a hospital redevelopment education session at her home, or working to strengthen UHKF’s face-to-face fundraising efforts, her uplifting presence, and willingness to participate across the organization at all levels, boosts the morale of staff and volunteers alike. As a Board member she sets fundraising goals for herself and is utterly fearless when it comes to inviting others to do likewise.

2024 Award Recipient: Dr. Gary Burggraf, B’nai Brith Kingston Lodge, and Bentley Davidson

With just over $276,000 in lifetime donations Dr. Gary Burggraf has shown a commitment to investing in healthcare that has spanned 40 years.  Starting with modest gifts in 1984, Dr. Burggraf now donates approximately $30,000 each year, choosing to support a wide range of departments from Cardiology to Clinical Laboratories, Nephrology, Cancer Care, Research, PCH Palliative Care and Redevelopment. Dr. Buggraf is a unique donor due to his longstanding career as a Cardiologist who spent his entire career at KHSC and Queen’s University. As donor and doctor, Dr. Burggraf has shown a true commitment to caring for his community. When undertaking the decision of where to designate his gifts, Dr. Burggraf always takes the time to learn about the urgent priorities at the hospital and meet with clinicians and researchers. Dr Burggraf has made an effort to stay connected to his colleagues and takes pride in learning how his support impacts their work and the care that is available to patients.

B’nai Brith Kingston Lodge’s commitment to building a hospice residence for our community has been transformational to Hospice Kingston’s fundraising campaign with over $950K being raised cumulatively at the 2016 and 2023 “Evening With” events. The 2016 “Evening with Dan Aykroyd” was the largest fundraising dinner in the history of Kingston with over $550K raised.  The 2023 “Evening with Hayley Wickenheiser” raised over $400K. B’nai Brith Kingston’s support will allow the creation and staffing for a space where families will find solace, where pain will be met with understanding, and the end-of-life journey is marked by moments of profound connection. The 10-bed hospice residence will accommodate the increasing need of palliative individuals and bereavement support in our community and enhance Hospice Kingston’s existing programs and services.

When Bentley Davidson was 2, he dressed up for Halloween as Gord Downie from The Tragically Hip. He didn’t plan to raise money but he received so much attention for his costume that his parents decided to turn it into a fundraiser. That fundraiser turned into an annual event, raising money for local charities. Since the age of two, Bentley has dedicated the month of October to collecting donations instead of candy, donating the proceeds to a different charity each year. KHSC has been the beneficiary twice; in 2021 Bentley raised $16,307 for the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic and in 2023 he raised $18,496.50 for juvenile diabetes which brings his 8 year fundraising total to an impressive $57,496.50. Bentley (a.k.a. Pint-Size Gord), is truly an inspiration to us all, demonstrating the impact that one individual can have, even at such a young age, in support of important causes.

Sister Dorothy Fournier Award for Volunteerism

Recognizing outstanding volunteer commitment.

In 2020, UHKF established the Sister Dorothy Fournier Award for Volunteerism to recognize the outstanding contribution of long-time UHKF volunteer, Sister Dorothy (“Sister D”).

The award is granted to an individual, organization or community group who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer commitment by dedicating their time to UHKF in support of work efforts, event preparation and mission moments, all to benefit health care in Kingston.

2024 Award Recipient: Sharon Vickers

Sharon Vickers has volunteered at UHKF for two and a half years. In that time, she has become a valuable member of our team, helping in many areas. Sharon brings with her years of experience that she shares with the team at UHKF. She is kind and generous with her time. Sharon volunteers 2 mornings a week, during which time she helps with many tasks including preparing donations for processing, answering the phones, greeting donors, taking donations and writing welcome cards to new donors to name a few. Sharon also lends a hand weekly to do thank you calls to our donors and makes every effort to actually reach a person, calling back many times in order to not leave a message as she believes the personal touch is so important.

Sharon is incredibly generous with her time and spreads her warmth everywhere she goes. She not only volunteers for UHKF but dedicates her time with Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), specifically at Hotel Dieu Hospital, which brings her much enjoyment. She once shared with a UHKF staff member that “walking into Hotel Dieu is like walking into a big hug.” Sharon will never refuse to help, and is always flexible with her time and talent.  She makes herself available at the drop of a dime, always professional, always pleasant, always friendly, and always genuine. Sharon is continually interested in what she is working on; she puts 100% into everything she does, no matter what the task. The one thing the staff of UHKF know is that if we call Sharon to volunteer, we need to have something for her to do - she does not like to sit idle!

Sharon’s ability to brighten the atmosphere at UHKF allows people around her to be themselves. She is genuinely interested in the staff and imparts her wisdom and knowledge freely. Sharon is truly a valuable part of the UHKF team and we all appreciate her very much. When she travels in the winter, her absence is felt and she is dearly missed. We are very fortunate to have such a kind, knowledgeable and dedicated volunteer as a part of our team.
