UHKF's Circle of Care series is a free opportunity for community members to engage with and hear from leading medical experts on rising health concerns, advice on how to stay healthy, advancements in care, breakthrough medical research and more.
Session Topic: Outer space is one of the most extreme environments the human body can face. In 2011, astronauts on the International Space Station were found to have swelling of the nerves in their eyes caused by the lack of gravity—a condition known as spaceflight neuro-ocular syndrome. This condition closely resembles a disease on Earth that mainly affects women, called idiopathic intracranial hypertension. By understanding and addressing this health challenge on Earth, we can drive innovations that will help make future missions to Mars possible.
This event will feature guest speaker, Dr. Susan Mollan, an internationally recognized Neuro-Ophthalmologist at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). She is a Clinician Scientist and Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization chair in research and innovation at Queens University, Kingston and an Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham, England. She has extensive clinical research experience with over 200 peer‑reviewed publications and her reputation for collaboration was recognized in being appointed as the first ever international board member at the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.
Her strategic aim is to improve the care of patients with blinding ocular disease, and inspire the next generation of doctors and clinician scientists.
The ophthalmology experts at KHSC provide a wide range of diagnosis, care and treatment for various conditions related to the human eye and manage three different clinics at the Hotel Dieu Hospital site including the Ophthalmology & Urgent Eye Care Clinic, Low Vision Rehabilitation Clinic and the Ophthalmology Clinic.
