Phil Schmitt is a Chartered Financial Analyst and Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute. He has over forty years of experience in the investment industry – more than thirty managing both alternative and traditional strategies, five years managing an ESG fund, four years’ experience with digital/crypto assets and strategies and fifteen+ years’ as an independent non-executive fund director with international fund managers. Phil is a pioneer in developing new financial products and services and building highly successful fund management companies.
Phil is presently CEO of Summerwood Group Inc., a firm that works with international, institutional grade alternative managers. He was previously CEO of Summerwood Capital Corp., a firm that managed and advised alternative funds and specialized in creating new, innovative alternative strategies and funds.
Prior to Summerwood, Phil was Vice-President and then President of Polar Securities Inc., an early entrant in the hedge fund industry. Executive responsibilities included Chair of the Portfolio Management Committee, Head of Risk Management, Chief Compliance Officer, and Trade Desk Supervisor.
Phil has served on multiple industry and regulatory committees both in Canada and internationally.
