Meet Brian and Jacki: high school sweethearts who have been married for 43 years.
Brian and Jacki were on vacation in Portugal when he started experiencing strange abdominal discomfort as well as periodic vision loss. Once back on the ground in Canada, Brian was scheduled for an angiogram at Kingston General Hospital and learned that he had almost a complete blockage in his arteries – he needed a quadruple bypass surgery the next day.
Brian and Jacki were shocked – they are both active, fit people. How could this happen so suddenly?
Jacki and their 3 children were together at our hospital when Brian went into surgery. The procedure went fine, but his recovery in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit was slow, so he went in for a second surgery to have stents put in.
After that, he recovered more quickly, and was also involved in our cardiac rehab program. Soon enough, he was sent home—but with permission to move and be active!
Today, they are back to walking hand-in-hand again, as they have been for nearly 50 years. Both avid walkers, they now have a puppy named Charlie who keeps them on their toes. And they are welcoming their first grandbaby in just a
