On June 20, 2018, the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) Board of Directors slate was confirmed. The Board of UHKF is responsible for fundraising, investment and granting for the Kingston Health Sciences Centre and Providence Care.
Members of the 2018-19 UHKF Board of Directors
Chair – Elizabeth Wilson – Born and raised in Kingston, Liz spent several years as Community Relations manager at the Kingston Whig Standard working with many community organizations on fundraising campaigns and special events. She is a past board member of the Salvation Army, the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes and Hotel Dieu Hospital. While on the board of HDH, Liz was a member of the Resources Planning Committee, the Ethics Committee and the Accreditation Committee. Liz and her husband Sandy have three adult daughters and four grandchildren.
Vice-Chair- Ewen MacKinnon – Ewen earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics from Queen’s University. He has worked for a number of international engineering and construction companies, nuclear generating stations and research institutions, as well as National Defense at CFB Kingston. Ewen is a past president of the Kingston Rental Property Owners Association and past director with the Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations, was a member of the Queen’s University Senate and has sat on municipal committees relating to rental housing and town-gown relations.
Ewen is an owner of MacKinnon Construction Ltd., a construction and project management firm serving the ICI and multi-unit residential sectors, and MacKinnon Development Corporation, a property management and development firm with commercial and residential properties.
Treasurer – Brent Wilson -Brent is a Carleton University alumnus with a Bachelor of Commerce, Honours. He joined the Kingston office of the firm currently known as Baker Tilly SEO LLP in August 1991 and in 1993 successfully completed the CICA Uniform Final Exam and obtained his Chartered Accountant designation. On January 1st, 2007 Brent became a partner with Baker Tilly SEO LLP.
Brent has many years of personal experience working as a volunteer for not-for-profit organizations. He has been involved with Epilepsy Kingston, the Cataraqui Clippers Soccer Club (coaching), the Charter Accountants Association of Easter Ontario, The United Way annual campaigns and serves as the Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Kingston General Hospital Foundation. Brent has two young sons.
Shama Acharya- Shama is a native Kingstonian, who traveled overseas to the U.K. for post-secondary education. She returned to Canada to work with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health as a clinical pharmacist working on the acute care and general psychiatry units. Shama took ownership of the Shoppers Drug Mart at Princess St. & Bagot St. in Downtown Kingston in the Spring of 2014. Shama is extremely happy to have the opportunity to move home and to give back to our community.
Tom Buchanan – Tom joined the KGH Board of Directors in 2008 and was elected Board Chair in 2012. As well as chairing the Board, Tom served as chair of the Board’s Senior Leadership Assessment & Compensation Committee. Prior to taking on these roles, Tom served as Chair of the Resources Committee. His role of Chair, KGH ended in June 2014.
Tom Buchanan has held a wide variety of positions within the life insurance industry since graduating in 1973 from Queen’s University with a B.Sc. in Mathematics. Tom started his career in Toronto with Empire Life’s sister company, the Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company. In 1975, Empire Life transferred him to Kingston where he worked for another 12 years. He continued his career in Toronto and held increasingly senior roles with other major insurance companies including Vice President of Marketing, Vice President of Group Insurance and Pensions, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President. In 2005, Tom returned to his roots in the Kingston area when he transferred here with Sun Life Financial and, prior to his retirement in 2013, he was the Financial Centre Manager. Tom, an actuary by profession, is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. An advocate of lifelong learning, he also holds the financial planning designations: Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant and Registered Health Underwriter. Tom and his spouse Colleen reside west of Gananoque and have three children.
Tony Button – Earlier in his life, Tony lived and worked in a number of provinces: Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. After leaving Labrador, he moved back to Ontario to attend Queen’s University where he attained a BA and MIR. Following completion of his MIR, he and his family decided to set down roots in Kingston, where they have lived for 30 years.
He worked as a Human Resources and Labour Relations consultant for a period before accepting a role as Manager of Labour Relations at Hotel Dieu Hospital. During his time there, he oversaw the labour relations activities during the Kingston Hospital restructuring of the mid to late 1990’s. Following that, he served as the Director of Corporate Services for K.F.L. & A. Public Health overseeing all administrative and support services until his retirement at the end of 2014.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Providence Care, and it is in that capacity that he joins UHKF as a cross-appointee.
Cheryl Doornekamp – Cheryl was Treasurer of Morven Construction Limited for 28 years. She has been actively involved in the community through the Canadian Cancer Society, The United Way, and the Limestone Learning Foundation. She has served as a member of the Donor Advisory Committee at UHKF and is looking forward to participating at the Board level. Cheryl and her husband Rene live in the Napanee area and have four children and six grandchildren.
John S. Leverette – John is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, Queen’s University and a 44 year member of our hospital medical staffs. He recently retired as Vice President, Medical and Academic Programs, Providence Care previously serving as Director, Medical Affairs, at both Kingston General and Hotel Dieu Hospitals. During 2014 he was appointed Interim Chief of Medical and Academic Affairs/Chief of Staff at Hotel Dieu.
As inaugural Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Specialty Committee in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, he was awarded a Founder’s designation in that specialty. He is a Distinguished Fellow and Life Member of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and a Life Member and Past-President of both the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Ontario Psychiatric Association.
Michel Longtin – Michel Longtin is a Senior Financial Advisor with Longtin Financial Services and Manulife Securities. For thirty years he has practiced Financial Planning and Estate Planning, first in the United States and, for the past twenty years, in Canada.
He holds a Certified Financial Planner designation and once held a Certified Fund Raising Executive designation. He spent four years at the Royal Ontario Museum Foundation working on planned gifts and a major campaign.
For 12 years he has been on the board of a national charity, and president for the last 6 years. He is frequently asked to speak at conferences on the subjects of planned giving and estate planning.
Evelyn Maizen – Evelyn is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Certified General Accountant and is self-employed in private practice. A graduate of McGill University with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Diploma in Education, Evelyn is a former high school teacher from Montreal where she grew up, Evelyn taught accounting at Canadore College, North Bay, and at St. Lawrence College, Kingston for many years.
Evelyn has volunteered with various not-for-profit organizations including Canadian Hadassah-WIZO, Epilepsy Kingston, the Kingston Family YMCA and Kingston Literacy and Skills. Evelyn is currently Chair Emeritus of Independent Living Centre Kingston and pleased to be serving on the UHKF board.
Wayne Owens – Wayne has held a variety of management positions with professional, IT and investment firms. Wayne started in Toronto in accounting with Peat Marwick, holding progressive positions with accounting and law firms before joining IBM. Here, he was involved in contracts, system design and marketing, holding management roles including National Marketing Manager for Canada. He travelled around the world leading an international team as US Global Offering Manager and US Regional Offering Executive. Following IBM, Wayne consulted as CEO, COO, CFO and Sales Executive. He then joined BMO Nesbitt Burns as an Investment Advisor, Chartered Investment Manager, Options licensed and Life Insurance, moving his practise to Manulife Securities prior to retiring. Wayne’s volunteer positions have included Chair of York University Business and Professional Alliance, Chair Canadian Cancer Society East York, Director Canadian Cancer Society GTA, Director Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the North York Chamber of Commerce, Director North York General Hospital Community Relations Committee. Wayne and his wife Lorri have 4 adult children.
Sherri Robertson – Sherri is a graduate of the KGH School of Nursing with a B.Sc N(Ed) from the University of Ottawa. Sherri’s experience consists of working at the Hospital for Sick Children and also teaching nursing at this hospital for the School of Nursing.
Sherri has also taught Inservice at Lyndhurst Hospital (Spinal Cord Injury Hospital) in Toronto and has worked in Family Practice and for private agencies.
Sherri is a volunteer at the KGH cancer clinic and the President of the KGH Nursing Alumnae.
The Board also includes Dr. David Pichora, President & CEO, Kingston Health Sciences Centre and Cathy Szabo, President & CEO, Providence Care.
Axel Thesberg, FCPA, FCA – In 2010, Axel retired as a partner in the National Office of KPMG Canada followed by three years serving as the Executive Chairman of KPMG’s global insurance program. Prior to his retirement, he served as Canadian Manager Partner, Professional Standards and Risk Management and on the Management Committee of KPMG Canada. In this capacity he was responsible for professional standards and risk management for KPMG Canada’s Audit, Tax and Advisory practices and, as a member of the Management Committee, responsible for managing the firm across Canada. Globally, Axel served as a member of KPMG’s Auditing Standards Panel, Quality and Risk Management Committee, and Professional Indemnity Insurance Committee.
Axel served as Chair of the Audit Commitee for the Toronto 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games and is a Senior Advisor to CPA Canada, providing advice on various projects related to enhancing the value of audit and financial reporting. He has served as a member of the Canadian Accounting Standards Oversight Council as well as developing the audit committee module for the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) Directors Education Program. He is currently the Academic Director for the ICD’s Business Financial Essentials Course and continues to be a frequent presenter at various CPA and ICD conferences and training courses on corporate governance, including role and responsibilities of audit committees, enterprise risk management, and future direction of financial reporting and auditing.
Axel is a Member of the Board of Directors of Kingston Health Sciences Center, Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee and a member of the Building Redevelopment Committee.
Andrew Bonham – Past Chair – Andrew is a partner in Cunningham Swan’s Business Law and Wills & Estates Groups with a special emphasis on taxation law. He holds degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Law from Queen’s University together with a Master’s Degree in tax law from the Osgoode Hall Law School.
Andrew has taught segments of the Business Law component of the Law Society of Upper Canada Bar Admission Course and is a former sessional lecturer in computer assisted legal research at the Queen’s University Faculty of Law. Andrew has served on the Board of the Kingston Access Bus and the Board of the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce.
