Across the globe, there is an undeniable stigma around mental illness and those that suffer from it. Even in this day and age, people can still be uncomfortable discussing the realities of mental illness within our communities and, in many cases, within our families. We are desperately trying to promote awareness and provide education to end the stigma.
The Mental Health and Addiction Care program at Kingston Health Sciences Centre is hoping to boost awareness in May 2022 by holding a campaign featuring activities over a week to promote ending the stigma around these issues. Some of these activities include lunch and learns, speaker presentations, community presence and an assortment of wellness activities to encourage everyone to look at their mental health and well-being.
The goal will be to have all people look at themselves and recognize that many of us have experienced some form of mental illness or addiction in our lives – depression, anxiety, smoking, gambling, and so many more.
